Getting a prom date can be hard if you don’t have a girlfriend or a boyfriend — and who is doing that old-fashioned thing these days? You have to find somebody to ask. You have to be nice to – and perhaps even spend some time with – any potential date.

A bunch of male students at Corona del Mar High School in the affluent Orange County suburb of Newport Beach, Calif. have allegedly found a different way: an NFL-style draft which ranks female students and sells first-round picks to male students looking to make a splash with a highly-coveted prospect.

School officials are trying to prevent the prom draft, reports the Los Angeles Times.

On Friday, the principal at Corona del Mar High, Kathy Scott, sent an email to parents objecting to the NFL-style selection process, warning that “it is not OK for any student to be objectified or judged in any way.”

Scott told parents that she had heard rumblings about such a draft last year.

“I am sure that the intention of this ‘draft’ is not to be harmful, but it may be,” Scott also wrote, according to Los Angeles television station KTLA.

According to the Times, a student said that the draft process involves male juniors and seniors drawing random numbers to determine the draft order. However, there is also an option to pay hard cash for a better draft position.

The unidentified student said one desperate junior paid $140 for the privilege of asking a particular female student he is sweet on.
