Kamala Harris Announces 2020 Presidential Bid

California Sen. Kamala Harris announces 2020 presidential bid

California Senator Kamala Harris announced Monday that she was running for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.

"Justice. Decency. Equality. Freedom. Democracy. These aren't just words. They're the values we as Americans cherish. And they're all on the line now," Harris said in a video released on social media at the same time she appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" to announce her bid.

"I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up for who we are," Harris said.

Harris will launch her campaign at a rally on Jan. 27 in Oakland, California, where she was born and raised.

"The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values. That’s why I’m running for President of the United States," Harris said in the video.

Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Before joining the Senate in 2017, she previously served as the 32nd Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017  and as District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2010.

Some of Harris' platform proposals include the "largest middle class tax cut in history" a Rent Relief Act that is designed to control housing costs, bail reform and Medicare for All. She has also promised to refuse corporate PAC money for her campaign.

The California senator joins a growing field of Democrats who have declared their intentions to run for nation's highest office. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, former Housing Secretary Julian Castro, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Maryland Rep. John Delaney have also announced their candidacies in the past few weeks.

If elected, Harris would become the second president after Richard Nixon to be born in California.
