After a beloved teacher’s toddler son was diagnosed with cancer, a group of his pre-calculus students wanted to do something to lift his spirits. Nathan Neidigk teaches at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico and had mentioned to his class earlier in the year that he wanted a Nintendo Switch, so they pooled their money to buy him one.
Each student pitched in about $20 so they could buy the game console, two games and a case for Neidigk. The teacher has been open with his students about his two-year-old son’s leukemia diagnosis, as well as the death of his wife in 2015, so they knew this could cheer him up.
“It was an incredibly generous gesture,” Neidigk says. “The meaning behind it was bigger than the fact that it was an awesome gift. They found the opportunity to do something nice and allow my family to have fun moments in time of intense stress.”
