The Bottom Line: Fun facts about lollipops!
The Full Story:
- A lollipop consists of a piece of hard candy (usually a thick disc) attached to the end of a small stick.
- The first lolly making machine was invented in 1908. A manufacturer had asked for a machine that could put out 40 lollipops per minute. Modern marvels make 5,900 a minute.
- The world’s largest lollipop was made in 2012. Made by California confectioner See’s Candy, the creation was 16-feet and 7-inches tall, weighed more than 7-thousand pounds. The chocolate-flavored concoction took 28 people and 14-hours to make.
- The word ‘lollipop’ used to mean other things. Back in the mid-1780s, Charles Dickens used the term to refer to stickless candies.
- The label for Chupa Chups was designed by famed artist Salvador Dali. As it happens, he and the candy’s creator were friends.
- In the Midwest, lollipops are known as suckers.
- The recipe for Dum Dums lollipops is pretty simple. It’s created as one flavor batch runs out, and the next one begins….whatever those two flavors are.
- Back in 2011, chicken pox-infected lollipops hit the black market. Why? Some parents believed that they could spark “natural immunity” from chicken pox by deliberately exposing their children to the disease. And don’t get any nutty ideas – it’s actually illegal.
