Minot Alliance to End Homelessness Activates Temporary Emergency Cold Weather Warming Center

Minot, ND — January 22, 2026, Due to dangerously cold temperatures forecasted for this week, the Minot Alliance to End Homelessness is activating a temporary emergency cold weather warming center to ensure individuals experiencing homelessness or lack of shelter have a safe, warm place to stay.

The warming center will operate Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week while wind chills are expected to fall below -30 degrees. This temporary shelter is an emergency response intended to prevent cold-related injuries and loss of life during extreme weather conditions.

The warming center will be located at Minot Salvation Army and will be coordinated through a collaborative effort between local nonprofit organizations, First District Health Unit, the Minot Police Department, the Minot Fire Department, and community volunteers. This coordinated response reflects a shared commitment to public safety and community well-being during severe winter weather.

“This is a temporary, emergency solution during extreme cold,” said Christy Miller, Executive Director of Souris Valley United Way. “No one should be outside in these conditions. This effort is about protecting human life during a dangerous weather event.” Said Lt. Trevor Reed of Salvation Army.

The Minot Alliance to End Homelessness emphasizes that this warming center is not a permanent shelter, but a short-term response activated only during life-threatening weather conditions.

Community members who wish to support this emergency response are encouraged to direct financial donations to The Salvation Army. Monetary donations are the most effective way to help, allowing the warming center to meet immediate needs such as staffing, meals, and supplies during extreme cold weather.

Media inquiries, contact Souris Valley United Way at 701-839-2994 or Salvation Army at 701-838-8925. Additional information will be shared as weather conditions evolve.

For immediate emergencies, individuals should contact local emergency services.
