Eating healthy is one of those things that seems like it should be easy, but is often confusing. Whether you’re trying to avoid carbs, keep it low cal or load up on protein, getting the right nutrients is essential to stay healthy, but knowing what to eat specifically can be tricky. That’s where experts can be very helpful and no one knows better than registered dietitians.
The annual “What’s Trending in Nutrition” survey, which polled 874 registered dietitians, is now out for 2025. It highlights what they want to see people adding more of to their diets and it’s all about superfoods.
- While the term “superfood” isn’t a recognized food category, it’s a catch-all nutritionists use to describe natural, nutrient-dense foods with a variety of health benefits.
- These include foods that are associated with improving gut health, supporting heart health, boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation and lowering cholesterol.
The top superfoods dietitians hope we’ll be eating more of in 2025
- Fermented foods - Like yogurt, kimchi, kombucha and pickled vegetables
- Berries - Including cranberries, blueberries and raspberries
- Bone broth
- Seeds - Like chia and hemp
- Avocado
- Leafy greens - Especially kale and spinach
- Nuts - Including almonds and walnuts
- Ancient grains
- Green tea
- Pulses - These include dry peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas
