Judge Richard Hagar has ordered 35 year old Cocoa Cummings of New Town., who caused a fatal car crash in 2015 to serve two years in prison. Cummings pleaded guilty in April to an amended charge of negligent homicide, stemming from an Aug. 2015 crash that took the life of 26-year-old Brittany Westman of Plaza. Prosecutors say Cummings fishtailed and collided with Westman’s car on a county road while attempting to pass. Investigators say Cummings was driving more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit moments before the crash.
Judge Richard Hagar sentenced Cummings to five years, with her serving two, followed by three years of supervised probation.
She will also have to discuss the accident with Westman’s family at a prearranged time, as well as speak with North Dakota Students on the dangers of reckless driving.
